The beauty profession puts the onus on beauty practitioners to make their clients feel confident and look beautiful.
And, let’s face it: regardless of what type of beauty professional you are, if you make a mistake and upset one of your clients, things can get ugly fast.
Moreover, your professional reputation may be permanently scarred, and there’s no glossing that over.
That reality highlights the necessity of having a beauty insurance policy to support you whether you care for your clients on a commercial property you own or lease or travel to your clients’ homes to deliver your services.

What Type of Beauty Professionals Need Insurance?
Whether you’re an independent beauty consultant or the owner of a barber shop, salon, or spa, all Canadian beauty professionals need to shield themselves from the threat of bodily injury and property damage claims or third-party lawsuits, including:
- Barbers
- Cosmetologists
- Electrologists
- Estheticians
- Eyebrow and eyelash technicians
- Hair colour specialists
- Hairdressers
- Hair removal specialists
- Hair stylists
- Laser and IPL technicians
- Makeup artists
- Manicurists
- Microblading specialists
- Nail care artists
- Pedicurists
- Perm specialists
- Skin care specialists
- Shampooers
- Tattoo artists
- Teeth whitening hygienists
- Waxing and sugaring specialists
Sometimes, you may be required to carry liability insurance to do your job or get a licence to practice.
Many beauty-related practitioners, such as electrologists and aestheticians, are regulated by the province where they live and work. Check with the regulatory authorities in your region to determine if you must be licensed to practice. Regardless, one accident or mistake could cost you your livelihood and career. That’s why you need to protect yourself with insurance.
What Does Beauty Insurance Coverage Include?
Although the policy you choose is specific to you and the risks you face as a beauty professional, a beauty insurance policy typically includes these coverages:
Professional Liability Insurance
Professional liability insurance covers the advice and services you offer to your clients that they pay you to provide. Also known as errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, it provides financial support for negligent acts, failing to deliver a service as promised, or misconduct if you’re facing an allegation of wrongdoing or are threatened with legal action by an angry client.
Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance
If your clients come to your place of business, CGL covers the cost of bodily injury or property damage to your clients. For example, if a client visiting your salon slips on a wet floor, falls, and fractures a wrist, CGL is designed to cover their medical expenses. If they were carrying a laptop computer when they fell, and it was damaged in that fall, CGL can cover the repair bill for your client’s laptop too.
CGL usually includes product liability insurance – a must-have for any beauty professional. Product liability coverage protects you from client claims alleging bodily injury or property damage from a product you use, sell, distribute, or manufacture. For instance, if you sell a skin care product to a client who has an allergic reaction to it, they could sue you for damages. Product liability insurance will provide you with funds to pay medical fees and defend yourself in court if necessary.
Commercial Property Insurance
If you own, rent, or lease a workspace for your spa, salon, or barber shop, you’ll need commercial property insurance to cover the cost of events beyond your control, like a fire or a burst pipe that causes water damage, theft, or vandalism.
Often, commercial property insurance includes business interruption insurance to reimburse you for loss of income and operating expenses if you’re forced to close your shop following an insurable event while repairs are taking place.
Cyber Liability Insurance
While pen and paper aren’t about to disappear anytime soon, you likely do business digitally, whether exchanging emails with your clients, using a point-of-sale (POS) system to collect payment for your services, or allowing your clients to book appointments with you. If, however, your website is hacked, the private data of your clients is stolen or compromised, or if you suffer a data breach, cyber liability protection is what may save the day. It gives you the funds you need to repair and restore your software systems, pay for credit monitoring services, and quickly get you back online.
There may be additional optional coverages you should consider adding to your policy. Speak to one of our insurance experts if you have questions or concerns about protecting your business or services.
