Tarot card readers attract open-minded individuals who place their trust in you to help them interpret the cards as they reflect on their thoughts and feelings to gain the insight they seek.
While the origin of the tarot is unknown, many theories exist about its history. Some believe that tarot originated in ancient Egypt; others place it in Italy during the Renaissance. Nevertheless, today, the tarot reading we are familiar with has been practiced for centuries by people of all social classes. It was seen as a way to gain insight into the past, present, and future.
After a decline in popularity in the 20th century, tarot reading has experienced a resurgence in recent years. Today, tarot is used by people worldwide. Using a deck of 78 cards that represent different aspects of life, such as people, places, events, and emotions, they are a tool that can give your clients perspective and help them make informed decisions about their lives.

If tarot cards speak to you, and you thrive on helping others on paths to self-discovery and personal growth, you need to build trust with your clients. One way to instill confidence in and build relationships with your clients is to have business insurance.
What Is Tarot Card Reader Insurance?
As with any other business or profession, tarot card readers need adequate insurance coverage to protect against various risks and liabilities, specifically designed to meet the unique needs of these businesses.
Given the nature of tarot card reading services, it is crucial to have adequate coverage to protect yourself against unforeseen events such as accidents or professional liability claims.
While it may seem like an additional expense, insurance for tarot card readers is highly recommended to ensure your services’ continuity and prevent falling into financial peril.
To create a comprehensive policy, you may need several types of insurance to protect your assets, including:
- Commercial general liability insurance: Covers you for third-party bodily injury and property damage claims. For example, if a client visiting you for a reading trips, falls, and is injured, they could sue you for damages. General liability is designed to cover the associated costs.
- Commercial property insurance: Protects your place of business, equipment and inventory, furniture and electronics if damaged, lost, or ruined by a fire, water damage, natural disaster, theft, and vandalism.
- Medical malpractice insurance: Also commonly referred to as errors and omissions (E&O) insurance or professional liability insurance, it protects tarot readers against claims of professional negligence, misrepresentation, inappropriate advice, mistakes, or failure to deliver a service as promised.
- Cyber liability insurance: As most things move into the digital space, the increase in cybercrime puts businesses and professionals at risk of being held liable for data breaches and cyber-attacks that compromise your clients’ data. Cyber liability insurance is a must-have if you provide tarot reading services online, have a website, or use a point-of-sale (POS) system to accept digital payments.
What Risks Do Tarot Card Readers Face?
Tarot card readers face various liabilities and risks that can cause financial and legal troubles. Some of the common liabilities and risks associated with tarot card reading include:
- Litigation: A client may sue a tarot card reader for various reasons, such as providing inaccurate or harmful advice, breach of contract, or negligence.
- Theft or damage to property: A client may steal or damage the tarot card reader’s property, such as tarot cards, tables, or other equipment.
- Harassment: A client may harass the tarot card reader, either verbally or physically.
- Violence: A client may become violent towards the tarot card reader.
- The unexpected: Tarot card readers may also face unexpected events, such as natural disasters or accidents in their places of business.
A customized business insurance policy can provide financial support for these risks and others. Without it, any of the above could be financially devastating to you.
How Much Insurance Coverage Does a Tarot Card Reader Need?
Insurance is not legally required in Canada for tarot card readers, though it is highly recommended. However, some municipalities may require tarot card readers to have insurance to obtain a business license.
How much coverage you need depends on the risks that you face. There are a few things to consider when figuring out how much coverage you need, such as:
- Where you provide tarot readings. If in a public place, such as a mall or a coffee shop, your premium may be higher than if you offer readings in a private setting, such as your home or a commercial property.
- The services you provide and the risks associated with them.
- If you have employees or are a sole proprietor.
- Whether you provide readings online or not.
- The value of your contents, inventory, and furnishings.
Generally, the cost of insurance for tarot card readers ranges from $500 to $2,000 per year. However, it will vary based on your chosen coverage options, the policy’s coverage limits, and the insurance provider.
How Can Tarot Card Readers Reduce Their Liability Risks?
Insurance can help protect you from financial losses, but you can also take steps to lower your risk of being sued:
- Informed consent: Before conducting a reading, give your clients all the relevant information about your services, including the limitations of your readings and the nature of the information you provide. Allow them to ask questions and make their own decision about whether or not to have a reading.
- Clear communication and avoid guarantees: Be transparent with your clients about the limitations of your services. Make it clear you are not a fortune teller or psychic and make no promises or guarantees about the outcome or accuracy of your readings. Doing so can help protect you from a liability claim if a client is unhappy with the results of a reading.
- Safe and secure environment: Another way to reduce liability risk is to maintain a safe and secure reading environment. Provide a clean and comfortable space for clients and ensure no hazards are in the area. It also means taking steps to protect clients’ privacy.
- Maintain professional boundaries: Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries with clients is important. That means avoiding personal or romantic relationships with clients and avoiding physical contact that is unnecessary for the reading.
The above steps will go miles in reducing risks. But one way to bolster your protection is by using a customer liability waiver, also known as an accident release form. While a waiver cannot guarantee that you will not be sued, it can help to strengthen your legal defence if you are ever faced with a lawsuit.
There are a few things that businesses can do to increase the likelihood that their customer liability waivers will be enforceable:
- Make sure the waiver is clear, concise, and understandable.
- Describe the activity or product and the risks involved.
- Include a statement that the customer understands and acknowledges the associated risks and releases the business from any injury liability sustained while getting a reading.
- Have an attorney review the waiver to make sure it is enforceable.
- It is imperative to have clients sign the waiver before they receive your services.
A customer liability waiver is not a substitute for business insurance and cannot protect a business from all risks. For example, a waiver will not protect a business from property damage, theft, or lawsuits unrelated to the business’s products or services.
Finally, follow some core principles such as keeping your cards and space clean, washing your hands often, avoiding urging your clients to make decisions based solely on your tarot readings, and remaining respectful of your client’s beliefs and opinions.
