Qualified massage therapists provide services that benefit overall health and wellness by helping to reduce pain, stress, anxiety, sleep disorders and improve circulation.
However, such a hands-on profession involves potential liability risks, and a single claim could financially devastate a therapist and their career.
Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) can protect themselves financially against claims of negligence, errors, and omissions – which may result in patient injury or financial loss – with malpractice insurance, also known as professional liability insurance or errors and omissions (E&O) insurance.
A comprehensive RMT insurance policy typically includes malpractice liability coverage, commercial general liability insurance, commercial property insurance, and cyber liability protection.

Here are nine reasons why massage therapists should have a customized massage liability therapist insurance policy:
1. It’s a Legal Requirement
Massage therapists are typically required by provincial law to carry liability insurance.
For example, in Ontario, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) requires its members to have professional liability insurance with $2 million of coverage per occurrence and $5 million of coverage in the aggregate per year. They are also required to maintain coverage for up to 10 years after ending their practice.
2. Coverage for Your Services
Malpractice insurance, or professional liability insurance, covers claims and allegations of professional negligence, mistakes, misconduct, failing to deliver a service as promised, and accusations of providing substandard treatment.
3. Coverage for Patient Injuries
Injuries to patients or visitors that occur in a massage clinic or due to an RMT’s daily operations can lead to expensive claims and lawsuits. General liability insurance is a critical part of a massage liability insurance policy. It covers third-party bodily injuries and property damage that happen in your clinic, like a trip and fall or because of your treatments.
4. Coverage for Allergic Reactions
The oils, lotions, and other products massage therapists use on their customers could cause someone to suffer a severe allergic reaction or skin rash. A therapist may be liable to cover their medical and rehabilitation expenses if they do. Liability insurance covers this type of third-party bodily injury claim.
5. Cyber Liability Protection
The software, digital payments, cloud storage, website, and online tools massage therapists and clinic owners rely on to serve their customers are susceptible to data breaches and cybercrime.
Cyber liability insurance is vital for helping affected professionals and businesses recover from a cyber-attack or data breach. It provides funds for legal advice, credit monitoring, restoration of affected software and systems, and crisis management services.
6. Business Property and Contents Coverage
Fire, water, natural disasters, theft, and vandalism can damage massage clinics, spas, and home-based clinics. Commercial property insurance covers these types of losses to a building, its attached structures, and the clinic’s contents (furniture, computers, equipment, inventory).
7. Business Interruption
If a massage clinic or an independent RMT is forced to temporarily close its workspace for repairs because of property damage caused by an insurable loss, such as a fire, business interruption insurance can help cover the lost income and overhead until it reopens.
Business interruption insurance may be added in a commercial property policy (you must have commercial property insurance to get business interruption coverage). It may be added to an existing commercial property policy if it’s not included.
8. Stolen Equipment
Many RMTs may be mobile, travelling to different locations to provide their services. If the equipment they need to do so is stolen or vandalized, a commercial property insurance policy may cover the cost to replace or repair it.
9. Flexibility
A comprehensive massage liability insurance policy allows therapists to work at multiple practices or locations – clinics, spas, hospitals, home-based clinics, or customers’ homes.
