Insurance for welders

Welders play a critical role in establishing the infrastructural integrity of metal components applied to most construction projects. Despite being an essential trade profession needed for nearly every industry, not all welders are the same. The tools and welding techniques utilized by welders will vary based on each metal’s unique properties, which presents various levels of risk depending on the projects you take on. As such, you should have a risk-management strategy to accommodate your needs.

Whether you run a small welding business or an industrial rig welder, liability insurance is essential to protect your business from unforeseen accidents.

Your welding business can be protected against lawsuit claims for accidents causing third-party property damage or bodily insurance with the proper insurance plan.

Welding liability insurance policies are designed for welders and provide financial coverage against the specific risks associated with your trade.

Due to the varying nature of welding, it is crucial to have insurance coverage specifically designed for the risks you encounter and the equipment you own.

A comprehensive insurance policy package for welders will typically include the following:

  • Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL) – Welders commonly work with heavy equipment intensified by high-heat stress, presenting a significant risk of severe accidents if something goes wrong. CGL is a coverage that protects you from the everyday dangers of working on a welding job site, such as third-party property damages or bodily injuries.
    • Important note: your CGL coverage limit may only apply to all full-time employees, not each individual. If you require the same amount of coverage for each employee, consider increasing your policy coverage limit.
  • Tools and Equipment Insurance is a necessary coverage to protect your most important assets. This policy may provide financial coverage to repair or replace lost, stolen, or damaged welding tools and equipment. Anything valued at less than $1,500 is considered a tool, whereas anything above is considered equipment.
  • Pollution Liability Insurance is a specialized coverage usually recommended for welders who work in industries or use methods exposed to higher pollution levels (e.g., metal active gas welding). Pollution Liability Insurance provides financial coverage for pollutant liabilities that result in third-party injury or property damage.

The primary insurance coverage that most small welding businesses require is Commercial General Liability Insurance. You can anticipate premiums starting from $1800 annually for a $1M limit. With additional policies added, such as Tools and Equipment coverage, you can expect the insurance premium to rise.

There are several factors regarding your business that is taken into consideration when determining the cost for a Welding Insurance policy package, including:

  • Number of Employees (Independent Contractor/Technician vs. Full-Time Employee)
  • Project Type (Commercial vs. Residential)
  • Years of Experience
  • Location
  • Tools & Equipment Owned
  • Annual and Projected Revenue

Regardless of the welding services provided (residential or commercial), lawsuits against your business can be costly. Operating without proper insurance can jeopardize your business if any accidents were to occur.

It is highly recommended to have insurance coverage that protects your business from liabilities and the equipment owned.

Frequently asked questions

Does my insurance policy cover sub-contractors?

Most insurance policies only cover full-time employees of the business and typically exclude subcontractors. Coverage extensions for subcontractors can be added to your existing policy if needed.

For subcontractors, it is recommended you purchase your own liability insurance to protect yourself across multiple work sites.
